The processing of expandable PS is divided into two steps. The first step is pre foaming or simple foaming, setting the density of the final product. In this process, the polymer particles containing foaming agent soften under heating condition, and the foaming agent volatilizes. As a result, there are many bubbles in each bead. The number of bubbles (final density) is controlled by heating temperature and heating time. In this process, the beads must remain dispersed and free flowing. In industrial production, the foaming process is carried out by placing the expandable polystyrene directly in the steam. Generally, the reaction is completed by the continuous mixing of the beads and steam in the agitator. The reaction equipment (such as Rodman pre foaming machine) is to keep the external pressure open and make the foamed beads overflow from the top. Some manufacturers use batch reactors to ensure more balanced residence time or when higher temperature is needed for some developable DPS.
